Attraction and repulsion of mobile wild organisms to finfish and shellfish aquaculture: a review ArchiMer
Callier, Myriam; Byron, Carrie J.; Bengtson, David A.; Cranford, Peter J.; Cross, Stephen F.; Focken, Ulfert; Jansen, Henrice M.; Kamermans, Pauline; Kiessling, Anders; Landry, Thomas; O'Beirn, Francis; Petersson, Erik; Rheault, Robert B.; Strand, Oivind; Sundell, Kristina; Svasand, Terje; Wikfors, Gary H.; Mckindsey, Christopher W..
Knowledge of aquaculture–environment interactions is essential for the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry and efficient marine spatial planning. The effects of fish and shellfish farming on sessile wild populations, particularly infauna, have been studied intensively. Mobile fauna, including crustaceans, fish, birds and marine mammals, also interact with aquaculture operations, but the interactions are more complex and these animals may be attracted to (attraction) or show an aversion to (repulsion) farm operations with various degrees of effects. This review outlines the main mechanisms and effects of attraction and repulsion of wild animals to/from marine finfish cage and bivalve aquaculture, with a focus on effects on fisheries-related...

Contrasting perception of fish trophic level from stomach content and stable isotope analyses: A Mediterranean artificial reef experience ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Ruitton, Sandrine; Ourgaud, Melanie; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
A large complex of artificial reefs was deployed in the Bay of Marseilles, North-Western Mediterranean, for the enhancement of commercial fisheries stocks. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope and stomach content analyses were performed on 23 fish species collected on the artificial reefs to assess their trophic position and feeding behaviour. Results indicated that fish diets were not modified on the artificial reefs compared to natural environments, nor was the structure of their trophic network. Artificial reefs, with their complex design, provide diverse and abundant food sources for fishes. Ranges of delta C-13 and delta N-15 of artificial reef fishes were comparable to those recorded in natural Mediterranean environments, with a similar trophic...

Functional traits unravel temporal changes in fish biomass production on artificial reefs ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Le Direach, Laurence; Rouanet, Elodie; Goberville, Eric; Astruch, Patrick; Ourgaud, Mélanie; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Artificial reefs (ARs) are deployed worldwide as they are expected to support fisheries management. While the underlying mechanisms remain widely debated, production was recently determined as the most probable cause of increases in fish biomass. Changes in fish biomass in a temperate AR system were investigated from December 2008 to November 2015 by considering seven distinct functional groups, and isotopic functional indices were used to identify how these changes may have affected organic matter (OM) fluxes. Contrasting patterns of change were observed between functional trophic groups, highlighting that combining the biomass of all species present in a community is inappropriate for assessing AR-induced effects. Benthic sedentary species predominated...

Local fishermen's perceptions of the usefulness of artificial reef ecosystem services in Portugal ArchiMer
Ramos, Jorge; Lino, Pedro G.; Himes-cornell, Amber; Santos, Miguel N..
Proponents of artificial reef (AR) deployment are often motivated by the usefulness of such structures. The usefulness of ARs is related to their capability of providing ecosystem services/additional functions. We present two distinct Portuguese AR case studies: (1) The Nazare reef off the central coast of Portugal and (2) the Oura reef off the Algarve coast. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with local fishermen in the fishing towns of Nazare and Quarteira pre-and post-AR deployment. The main focus of the interviews was to understand fishermen's perception of AR usefulness (or lack thereof) in terms of nine ecosystem services/additional functions potentially provided by the ARs. We tested the null hypothesis that ARs do not provide additional...

Marine protected areas and artificial reefs: A review of the interactions between management and scientific studies ArchiMer
Claudet, Joachim; Pelletier, Dominique.
Inshore marine areas host key habitats for the biological cycle of many marine populations, but are subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Uses of inshore areas are multiple and often give rise to conflicting interests. In this context. marine protected areas (MPAs) and artificial reefs (ARs) are increasingly regarded as interesting management measures, in that they contribute to ecosystem conservation, fisheries sustainability, and because they can be helpful in zoning coastal areas in order to reduce conflicts between users. Beyond these expected benefits, it is important to appraise whether MPAs and ARs meet managers' objectives. This review focuses on the interaction between ecological sciences and management in the purpose of establishing or...

Potencial atrator de tubarões costeiros em recife artificial no litoral norte do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Faria,Vicente Vieira; Novelli,Ronaldo; Gomes,Marcelo Paes; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
Artificial reefs have been used in many countries to increase coastal fishery productivity. In order to increase fish attraction to the Northern Coast of Rio de Janeiro State, it was installed an artificial reef (1,500 m²) 5 nautical miles off Manguinhos's Bay (São Francisco de ltabapoana, Rio de Janeiro). The artificial structures were made of tires, concrete and cement blocks. A gill net of 125 x 3 m was monthly used in the artificial reef (AR) and in a control area (CA) to determine the effect of the experimental structures on the stock and diversity of coastal sharks. Considering the complexity of a sustainable elasmobranch exploitation, sharks were focused in this study. During 24 months of investigation (April/96 to March/98), a total of 325...

Sessile and sedentary macrofauna from the Pirapama Shipwreck, Pernambuco, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lira,Simone Maria de Albuquerque; Farrapeira,Cristiane Maria Rocha; Amaral,Fernanda Maria Duarte; Ramos,Carla Alecrim Colaço.
Shipwrecks are considered artificial reef environments - structures immersed in aquatic environments (especially marine ones) that provide fauna with shelter, hard substrates, food and nursery areas. This study aimed to survey the benthic animal biodiversity of the Pirapama shipwreck, located 23 m deep and six miles off Recife harbor. From 2001 to 2007, species were observed, photographed and collected through scuba diving. The material was later sorted and identified in the laboratory. A total of 76 sessile and sedentary animal taxa were recorded belonging to the following phyla: Porifera (Demospongiae and Calcarea), Cnidaria (Hydrozoa and Anthozoa), Mollusca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda), Annelida (Polychaeta), Arthropoda (Cirripedia), Bryozoa...

Spatial partition of artificial structures by fish at the surroundings of the conservation unit - Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta, SP, Brazil BABT
Cunningham,Patricia Teresa Monteiro; Saul,Andreia de Carvalho.
The aim of this work was to study the spatial partition dynamics of fish at artificial structures. Holed structured concrete blocks were used to construct eight identical artificial structures and disposed between 3m-6m depths. Installation was made in two steps during 1996 (May/June and November/December) and daily observations were carried out during 30 consecutive days SCUBA diving. The artificial reef areas were used in discriminated ways by the fish community and was most probably influenced by several factor, mainly biotic. The results of the Krustal-Wallis test led to the refutation of the hypothesis that the artificial structure spaces were shared and randomly used by fish.
